Re: Electronic Music Systems
Hello flowstoners,
I recently and not so recently came across some interesting stuff that I would like to share with you:
A collection of interesting topics from MATLAB, DSP, Graphics Module No: CM0268
http://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave.Marshall/Multimedia/
notes are found here:
http://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave.Marshall/CM0268/PDF/
For example a course on Digital Audio Effects
http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/CM0268/PDF/ ... dio_FX.pdf
and ressources there:
http://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave.Marshall/ ... _Examples/
An interesting portal: Sound and Music Computing Network
http://www.smcnetwork.org/
You have to see it, I think it is great.
Professor's Chan website
http://www.eie.polyu.edu.hk/~enyhchan/
He offers for example a tutorial on audio and midi:
http://www.eie.polyu.edu.hk/~enyhchan/audio_midi.pdf
Professor Dannenberg's website at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science:
For example:
Style in Music
https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rbd/papers/rbd-style-2009.pdf
From his website: "In Pittsburgh called to interview me. At one point the reporter asked if “Roger Dannenberg, trumpeter” would be right, and I said “trumpeter, composer, computer scientist, whatever you want.” The reporter got excited, ”ooh, I like that, ‘trumpeter, composer, computer scientist’. They may edit out ‘computer scientist’ but I'll put it in anyway.”"
An interesting University website
http://eprints.maynoothuniversity.ie
For example:
Sinusoids, noise and transients: spectral analysis, feature detection and real-time transformations of audio signals for musical applications
http://eprints.maynoothuniversity.ie/4523/
And another one:
http://www.ofai.at/ which is the site of The Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI) of the Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies (OSGK)
For example:
Evaluating rhythmic descriptors for musical genre classification
http://www.ofai.at/cgi-bin/get-tr?downl ... 004-10.pdf
A rather antique (2002) book about
Computer Sound Design : Synthesis Techniques and Programming
http://io.teiion.gr/xmlui/bitstream/han ... sAllowed=y
and a look from Cornell's point of view at the top ten algorithms of the 20th century:
pi.math.cornell.edu/~ajt/presentations/TopTenAlgorithms.pdf
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 5816318999
links to
Harmony Search Algorithm: A Unique Music-inspired Algorithm
or
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 9-main.pdf
and another paper:
The Evolving Drum Machine
cmr.soc.plymouth.ac.uk/Musical2007/papers/Yee-King.pdf
plus a presentation on "Musical Analysis of the Electronic Dance Music"
hpac.rwth-aachen.de/teaching/sem-mus-17/Final-slides/Lyubenov.pdf
The Harmonic Series provides
A path to understanding musical intervals, scales, tuning and timbre.
in.music.sc.edu/fs/bain/atmi02/hs/hs.pdf
Mathematics and Music
https://www.math.wustl.edu/~wright/Math109/00Book.pdf
Introduction to Algorithmic Composition and Pure Data - Yagiz Mungan
yagizmungan.com/ACinPD.pdf
An introduction to Sonic Pi:
It is an easy-to-use, freely downloadable software application, aimed at those new to computer
programming, but powerful enough to generate really sophisticated music.
https://www.rhinegold.co.uk/wp-content/ ... nic-Pi.pdf
http://antor.uantwerpen.be/
ANT/OR is a research group of the University of Antwerp, focusing on (applications of) Operations Research.
They publish interesting stuff, like:
Dance Hit Song Prediction - ANT/OR - Universiteit Antwerpen
antor.uantwerpen.be/wordpress/wp-content/papercite-data/pdf/herremans2014dance.pdf
Rather off-topic, but I found interesting stuff about graphics formats there:
Course: CISC 451/651: Data Compression in Multimedia
https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~amer/CISC651/
I'm lately tinkering with music visuals, so this one was interesting:
staff.pccu.edu.tw/~tdl/VisualMusic.pdf
Have a nice week-end you all!
Regards
Phil

Re: Electronic Music Systems
The author of the document in the original post, Alan Strange, also wrote the 'owner's manual' for the Buchla Music Easel with the oh-so 70's title of "Programming and Meta-Programming the Electro Organism - An Operating Directive for the Music Easel".
https://ln.sync.com/dl/36f903520/kh3ud3 ... z-d68ysqsf
If you don't happen to have a Music Easel you can follow along to an extent with my tinker-toy SM approximation of it.
You wont fool any Buchla-heads with it, but it's a bit of fun.
By the way Phil - what is your avatar a picture of, is it a ceiling?
