Hello Spogg and RJ, hello forum,

thank you for the appreciation. Usually I am too knackered after work to do anything intellectually demanding, but I have so much fun with Flowstone that at least I try to get knowledgeable about the basics. The net helps a lot.

There are very special people in this forum who let others participate by providing tutorials, schematics and entire instruments. Without those contributions I'd stand no chance of ever making any progress, so take these posts as my thank you to you all. I love to share and as I don't have much when it comes to Flowstone per se, I'll let you take part in my readings.

Here are some more links:

Hello flowstoners,

it's Friday and here's some fun stuff to read and look at for the week-end +:

Digital Signal Processing: A User’s Guide

Digital Filter Design

Digital Signal Processing Foundations

"Signals are all around us and come in a wide variety of shapes and forms. When we speak we create pressure variations in the air which generate audio signals; earthquakes produce large seismic signals; healthcare professionals monitor ECG signals which capture the electrical activity of the heart; radio, internet and telephone signals are being transmitted across the world; the list of signals is endless! (see 2 minute video at for some examples) Digital signal processing (DSP) is primarily about making use of computers to help us analyse and manipulate signals in order to help us with our everyday lives. To get a flavour of where DSP is being used check out the lists below; it really is a key component in many innovative solutions and products in recent times."

DSP 2nd Edition:

"This book provides an account of the mathematical background, computational methods and software engineering associated with digital signal processing. The aim has been to provide the reader with the mathematical methods required for signal analysis which are then used to develop models and algorithms for processing digital signals and finally to encourage the reader to design software solutions for Digital Signal Processing (DSP). In this way, the reader is invited to develop a small DSP library that can then be expanded further with a focus on his/her research interests and applications."

Hello flowstoners,

the week-end is coming and here is some stuff to read.
As I am currently playing with a sequencer project, the focus of this post is on music theory and automated music composition.

Music in Terms of Science

The Distance Geometry of Music

Harmonic materials of modern music; resources of the tempered scale

The diatonic modes in modern music

Ethnic Musical Scales ... cOtherwise

Eighty Musical Sentences

Scales and arpeggios for the pianoforte

Scales, intervals, harmony

A primer of modern musical tonality : intended for self-study, as an introduction to the study of harmony

Six Techniques for Algorithmic Music Composition
This paper describes six of the techniques used by the programs that compose music for the automated telephone demo. Each algorithm presented seeks to implement a single composition idea well. Combinations of these algorithms have been used as the basis for applications as diverse as a real-time network transmission monitor and an incidental music generator for videotape productions

Techniques for Algorithmic Composition of Music
This paper is an overview of various techniques used by the author over the last 3 years in the production of computer-generated music. It covers work using semi-random noise, chaotic dynamical systems, contour analysis, and evolutionary programming

DISCO: An object-oriented system for music composition and sound design
This paper describes an object-oriented approach to music composition and sound design. The approach unifies the processes of music making and instrument building by using similar logic, objects, and procedures. The composition modules use an abstract representation of musical data, which can be easily mapped onto different synthesis languages or a traditionally notated score. An abstract base class is used to derive classes on different time scales. Objects can be related to act across time scales, as well as across an entire piece, and relationships between similar objects can replicate traditional music operations or introduce new ones. The DISCO (Digital Instrument for Sonification and Composition) system is an open-ended work in progress.

Just had a quick read at this and it is awesome! It actually speaks to beginners more than to professionals, but that's exactly why I highly recommend it for those who are already a bit familiar with Ruby, but not with certain details of algorithm programming. A big part of this book is pathfinding, which you only need when developing games, but the rest is very valuable (like dozens of sorting algorithms, matrix programming and such).
