Simple questions about hold and retrigg on Env

What is Hold and retrigg doing on envelope and what can it do if its enabled. Because i did struggle on some problems using hold on mod envelope. Some of the modulation/sounds i made dident go away untill i removed the release on the mod env. So what can i use those for +rep for the one who help me here.
