Sorry to hear you're having problems, what OS and SP are you using? XP?

I wonder if there is something missing that's needed by Ruby. It's definitely not an OS incompatibility but if you have a very clean XP install then it could be that there are some dlls missing that are needed for the ruby dll. First suggestion would be to try installing the VC2008 redistributable:

Thanks for your help.
I'm on XP. Flowstone 1 was ok. version 2 crashes the same way as version 3.
support wrote:try installing the VC2008 redistributable

Tried that-no good.
So I then tried a 2nd CPU(laptop-XP) no good as well- and then I installed the
VC2008 redistributable, and Flowstone fired up all good.
Its running on my crappy old laptop-so you guys are in the clear, and I close the laptop.
I've got an issue somewhere on my main CPU......so i start fresh...
I deleted every trace of flowstone(registry/docs&settings-everything) and I removed
the VC2008 redistributable, I tried a fresh install of both.
Still no good.
Not much time to troubleshoot unfortunatly.
I am seeing some issues with my Firewall- probably got a bug or two somewhere-
will run some anti-virus and malware over the next week and see what's going on.

Any more ideas......thanks

Not really, we have tested it on all types of systems XP-Win7 over the last few months with no issues. So it appears you are in isolation here?

One of the only things that we know about that is missing on some XP machines is the Visual C++ redistributable files (there are a few of them), are you on SP3?

As it seems to be the Ruby .dll that is having trouble, maybe it is worth asking around on the Ruby forums to see if there are any known issues?

Nice idea trogluddite but it may not turn up much. The ruby dll was built by us using Visual C++ 2008. The crash is almost certainly occurring because some of the dependent files are missing.

It's possible that on the Ruby forums someone else may have tried to build the dll in this way and come across the same problem. In our case it was solved by making sure all service packs were installed together with the VC++ redist. We tried this with a clean XP install and it worked fine.

One other thing worth trying is to install the latest version of IE - that sometimes provides extra system files that can get round these issues.

Yes.

Did it-still no good.

Can you tell from the error report which files are missing?
Does flowstone created a "crashlog' that i can send you?
trogluddite wrote:maybe it is worth asking around on the Ruby forums

I'm thinking to download another "Ruby" type of program and maybe kick start it from
another angle or something. Don't know anything about Ruby-any tips will be great.
Will have to wait. This chat is all the time i got.
Thanks guys. back another day....

Not sure it this helps but, after startup and the error pop-up comes, flowstones interface
does all load up. if you drag the error screen out of the way, there's this

This is supposed to be the example file yes?
I saved it, just in case it may help

Thanks for your patience billv.

I don't think that downloading other Ruby tools will help - unless of course they use Ruby compiled into a dll using Visual Studio 2008. Very happy to be proved wrong though :-)

We can't tell what files are missing from the error report and unfortunately it occurs before FlowStone has a chance to trap the problem and produce its own report.

The screenshot you posted is indeed the example schematic but of course none of the Ruby drawing is working there hence the reason it all looks a bit odd.

This is a bit of a long shot but try searching your PC for msvcr90-ruby191.dll. Search the system folders too. Delete any of these and re install FS3. Let us know if that has any effect.

We have seen this once before on an Embedded XP system about a year ago with V2 and it turned out to be missing Windows SXS dependency files. (basically missing files needed to run certain C++ programs)

The error was exactly the same with the Ruby dll etc.

The solution was to install SP3 & the Microsoft Redistributables:

Try These:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=5555
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5582
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999

You can also try the .net redistributable:

How do you trap the problem?
