I found this nifty little '20 log 10' module somewhere in my travels, and I put it aside to evaluate it.
I built this set of schematics and I think it will help in understanding the power of logarithms.
Here are 3 schematics, ranging from 1 to 10, 10 to 100, and 100 to 10,000, and the logarithm of each set of numbers.
Have fun twiddling the stepper dials, notice how the module does some pretty fancy calculations.
Open up the dials, enter your own ratios, experiment, learn !
Enjoy and help the kiddies (and ME) understand these things !

For the beginners, here's some things to know about 'knobs'.
As supplied, they deliver a 'voltage' from 0 to 1.
These are NOT voltages, but numbers.
It took me a while to get used to that idea, you can't burn things out with too much 'voltage', etc.
You can program the output of these 'knobs' to deliver any range of numbers you like, including negative numbers, and numbers in a nonsymmetrical range.
I set up three 'knobs' (that word STILL 'kills' me), the first one is what you get out of the box, 0 to 1.
The second one I reprogrammed to go from -1 to 1, and the third is an asymmetrical output of from -3 to 12.
Open 'em up, see what I did, and now you know how to develop your own custom 'knobs' !!

Here's another super simple setup that demonstrates how 'inversion' works.
So simple a child can do it, but when you have to invert a number stream, you can spend hours trying to figure it out.
I did it for you, enjoy this little tip and save some time !

As promised, here's a nice piece of test gear we use here to test levels throughout a schematic.
Since we export a 44.1 kHz 16bit format, this meter is set to read down to -96 dBs, the lower limit of 16 bits.
It will also read OVER the 16 bit limit of 0 dBs, so you can avoid head crashes or otherwise overtaxing your brickwall limiter, which you shouldn't need anyway if you're doing things right.
If there is any interest in this type of thing, I will show you how to calibrate your soundcard and do many other procedures that will lead to a cleaner sound.
Now to that dB meter.
Set it up to what you know to be a correct 0 dB signal, and trim the meter to read 0 dBs.
Now you're ready to see what those signals are doing throughout your signal chain.

Similar to Spogg's Threshold Mute, above, this set of two LEDs shows you at a glance WHICH faders are not completely OFF.
It also introduces you to some simple 'operator' gates, 'equal', 'greater than', well you'll see.
Just make sure that the number that you enter into the 'float' window is the SAME number as the LOW value of your fader or 'knob' (there's that word again).
Put one on every channel fader, and 4 hours into that mixdown session at 2 in the morning you'll start to see where this addon makes sense.
'Oh yeah, track 15 is still 'open', oooops' !!
Dead simple schematic, but that's the point of this thread, enjoy !!

Here's an oscillator that nobody needs until they NEED one, then all work stops while they scour the forums for one.
Sweep generators are super handy for checking out frequency responses of various filters and other systems, amps, modulators, etc.
So instead of waiting 'til you need one, download THIS one and if nothing else, play with it and annoy the cats !!
Is it lab grade ??
