Direct Sound not started

On your PC do you have a front panel with jacks for the sound card? If you do have you tried unplugging the header cable for the front panel?

Hi Spogg, yes I do have a front panel with female plugs for the sound card. But unplugging the Front Panel header cable makes no difference (and I mean unplugging it directly from the main board front panel connector). Currently I only make use of the rear panel stereo output anyway.

Okay, here goes... I followed your instructions to the letter, but still no luck there.

BUT here is the GOOD NEWS !! If you did not make mention of those settings, I would not have been motivated to do any further tampering so here is what I did next and I nearly fell out of my chair when it worked:

1) Open the Realtek HD Audio Manager

2) And on the Speakers Tab, look for a small yellow Folder Icon in the far right top corner and left click on it with the mouse

3) Another small Menu will then open up, called the Connector Settings

4) Then on the Connector Settings Menu I Disabled (unchecked) the "Front Panel Jack Detection"

AND IT WORKED!!!

But, I then went back there to the Connector Settings and strange enough - the check mark which I had just unchecked is checked again!! BUT IT STILL WORKS!!!

Again, thanks to all the people that assisted me, without your help and encouragement.. well, maybe I would never have located this tricky problem. This thing has been bothering me for months now.

Tiffy, thank you so much for sharing your solution. I have another PC now, and it is an older one with Win7 and Realtek. And guess what, I had the very same issue! I followed your steps (just that I needed to check "disable front panel detection", and it keeps being checked), and it worked like a charme!
Awesome. I did remember that we once talked about something with DirectSound issues here on the forums, so it was a relief to find the solution as well!

I know this is an old post, but I ran into this problem today when I decided to open a project on my game rig instead of my sound rig. It was driving me nuts and I almost gave up. The yellow folder which is not obvious and turn off the detect front jack/head phones.

Hi all ! I had a similar problem today after reloading my schematic. Eventually I found the reason for this error on my Windows 11 laptop and fixed it. It was the mic. I have formerly dissallowed usage of it to all apps, and FlowStone was one of them. Enabled mic usage back and the DS error was gone.
