You need to look into formants and voice synthesis! It's a fascinating topic for certain.
I made a vocal-sounding synth which you can take a peek at; the Quilcom Informant:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8405&p=34330&hilit=informant#p33866
The incuded docs may also help.
Have fun!

The trouble with using a wave with formants burnt in is that the formants will shift with the pitch as you move up and down the keyboard (chipmonk effect). To avoid this use a vowel filter, for instance this one here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3726&p=20560#p20560
If you do want the chipmonk then simply run a saw through the vowel filter and save one cycle of it as your waveform.

The other method, which I used in a section of the Informant, is to generate the resonant components as grains. The hardware method for doing this was patented by Yamaha.
This approach gives a much greater degree of control but uses much more CPU. It was interesting to experiment with, but I’m not convinced the results are any better than using the filter method.
Of course formants are present and can be fixed or variable for real-world instruments and enclosures too. It’s been said that the formants for a Stradivarius make it distinct because they are more like those of a female singer.
Cheers

Yeah, you can take grains with a formant signature and release them at different rates so the pitch will vary while the formants stay in place. That's cool.
One advantage of the vowel filter method is you can morph vowels like in a wah wah.

The vowel filter is optimized for stream (blue), it will not work in the poly section (white). I'll up a poly version in a few days.
