Generally I'd like to end up with some "average" colorspace, based on natural perception of different wavelenghts of light. So - nothing perfect, and yet - representative, I guess. Next step would be to determine few homogenic (perceived in similar way) levels of intensity per color (gamma based?). Thus - each level of intensity would be be able to some degree - reflect one octave of so transposed sound. I guess 6 basic octaves (from 64-4096), plus optional two more (<64, >4096) on borderlines for "shade of dark and light". Amplitude could be reflected by transparency (alpha channel), 6dB per level I guess.
Trog - would you like to play with it a little bit? You seem to know more from practical side of that wole color mixing thing, so you know by keyword what to look for and what are the approaches.

Hmm... I'm trying to figure out how to add gamma/brightness (darker or lighter version to the color), but with no luck. I thought that this is the "gamma" in ruby, but it seems to be not? I don't know yet how to approach it. Any ideas?
